Web Performance Metrics You Should Be Tracking

Performance isn't just about vanity metrics; it's about user experience and SEO. With Google's latest updates, the focus has shifted entirely to responsiveness.

Goodbye FID, Hello INP

First Input Delay (FID) measured the delay of the first interaction. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) measures the responsiveness of all interactions. This is a much higher bar. To optimize for INP, you need to yield to the main thread frequently and avoid long tasks.

Optimizing SSR with Next.js

Server-Side Rendering (SSR) is great for FCP (First Contentful Paint), but it can hurt TTI (Time to Interactive) if hydration is heavy. We recommend:

  • Server Components: Move as much logic to the server as possible to reduce client bundle size.
  • Streaming: Use React Suspense to stream HTML as soon as it's ready, rather than waiting for the entire page to generate.
  • Lazy Loading: Defer non-critical components and scripts.
